I volunteer with the Center for Positive Sexuality, a non-profit that “address(es) social issues through sex positive research and education.” With the turn of the new year, I will be venturing forth into the Center’s Sex Positive Professional Certification Program (SPPCP), cataloging my progress through the program here.
Why become a sex-positive professional?
- As a writer: Less of a goal and more of a calling, my orientation as a person, professional & casual, has been largely the same since I was very young. My essence is that of a writer. It is my sincerest hope to align this passion and craft with the educational spirit of the positive sexuality framework. Words are strangely powerful. We have given them this power. Dissecting intention from impact, a writer must select each word with the forethought of their audience and context. Words matter through the lens of positive sexuality. By going through the Sex Positive Professional Certification Program, I hope to better understand the importance of my word selection in developing a sex-positive culture.
- As a designer: Graphic representations have the power to draw the eye via layout, formatting, color, scale, and so many more tools in the graphic designer’s toolkit. If executed well, this artistry can shift a mood and create a vibe – it can communicate a brand, a person, or a story. It can act as a stand-alone medium or serve to reinforce and support written communication. In developing my positive sexuality knowledge, I hope to better develop my graphic application as a primary, secondary, and tertiary communication skill.
- As a photographer: Image-based content can be so moving. How do we tell a story without using any words? For me, a good photo should always be one of perspective. In deepening my knowledge of different perspectives within the realms of positive sexuality, ultimately, I hope to grow as a photographer by expanding my understanding of narratives outside of my own limited perspective. With this pursuit, I aim to help create a community of support and sex positivity through image-based content.
In recognizing the different mediums of learning I hope to expand my professional journey through written, graphic, and image-based content. Now that’s posi-sexy.
The SPPCP program is organized into 10 modules. I aim to complete one module each month, with a break in September to celebrate Positive Sexuality Day! Stay tuned next month as we begin our journey into the first module and reflect on the sex-positive framework as a whole.
